Smoking More Than One Cut Of Meat

Question Submitted by Terry:

If I cook more than one meat, does the cooking time change?

I have been BBQ'n for years, at least grilling. I just purchased a Char-Griller Pro; 1st smoker I have owned. One of my questions; when cooking Beef, Pork or Chicken, when the cooking time says 1.5 hours per pound and I have a 4lb roast, would I cook it for 6 hours? 2; Does it make a difference if I have 2 4lb roasts 8lbs total? 3; Will I still cook 6 hours? 4; Same with chicken; by adding 2-3 birds how do I determine the correct cook time? Last, when using a water drip pan how full should the pan be filled with liquid?
Thanks!!!

The main thing to remember is to cook to a consistent internal temperature. If you normally cook the 4lb roast to 180-190 degrees F, then that is what you should stick to. The length of the cooking time should not vary that much as long as you follow the same practices you normally do; only opening the smoker lid when you apply a mop etc. Remember that the meat is done when it reaches a certain temperature.

I would fill the water drip pan about 1/2 to 3/4 full. I also like to add other liquids like a good amber bock beer, and a few chopped onions, garlic, or just about any thing else that would give off a nice flavor when it is steamed. I hope this helps and let me know if you have any more questions.
